Survivors carry the heavy burden of shame and worthlessness. It defies the right to ask for that which our souls crave.
What do you want, she said, if you could have your dreams?
What would you choose, she asked, so your heart would sing?
What do you wish when the sun sails across the day?
Dare to speak it now. Send it on its way.
So I told her how I dreamed of walking in the land of the holy ones
How I’d pray where the sun bows its head in the sky.
I would dance where the clouds meet the stars in the night.
I’d give birth to myself every day of my life.
Surely that’s not too much, surely that’s not too much,
Surely that’s not too much to ask.
Now tell me more, she said, of your cherished dreams,
What else you’d choose, she asked, so your heart would sing.
What is your wish when the moon sails across the night?
Dare to speak it all. Send it on its flight.
So I told her how I dreamed of laughing
Where the mountains kiss the angels’ feet.
How I’d hold the simple hand of joy and we’d slide down the sky,
How I’d watch love take wing and the wings multiply
To infinity’s roar all the days of my life.
Surely that’s not too much, surely that’s not too much
Surely that’s not too much to ask.
Now will you know, she said, how to love your dreams?
Will you choose to dance so your heart will sing?
And will you laugh as your dreams sail across each day?
Dare to give them birth. I send you on your way.
Surely that not too much, surely that’s not too much
Surely that’s not too much to ask.
