Construction Under Way

On the way into Boston where Route 2 goes into Fresh Pond Parkway there was for many months endless road construction in process.  Not a place to go if you were in a rush.  And a great metaphor for not rushing recovery.  You just cannot make it go any faster than your heart and soul can handle.

Driving down the highway on a cold sunny day
Daydreaming all about the smart things I’ll say
When I get to redo yesterday.
I’m in a flurry ‘cause I said the wrong thing.
I guess my worry gave my brain static cling,
But I stuttered, muttered anyway.

Then ahead I see it.  The sign is saying
‘Slow down.  Expect delays.  There is construction under way.’
The signs are clear.  We’re not far astray.
There’s still some light in the day.
And if your foot is heavy on the pedal
Turn on the cruise control.
Settle back and mind the steering.

Racing up the sidewalk to the neighborhood store
I don’t notice much what’s right at my door
‘Cause I see what’s not there anymore.
Now I see double.  I know what to do.
But there’s still trouble ‘cause I’m missing my cues
I fumble, stumble evermore.

Zipping down a shortcut on a late day to school
I think about a promise that I made.  I was a fool
‘Cause I know inside I’m overruled.
I cannot keep it.  I left out half my heart.
If I continue I’ll be acting a part
And I’ll space out, phase out, lose my cool.
